Waterfalls: Moorabool Falls, Lal Lal Falls and Granite Falls
Moorabool is home to three stunning waterfalls, which can all be viewed in a single, easy hike.
Moorabool Falls and Lal Lal Falls offer the most substantial viewing experience for those chasing the classic crashing and cascading waterfall experience, but the smaller and more serene Granite Falls has a natural beauty all its own.
The ideal starting point is Lal Lal Reserve, where you’ll find a playground, picnic tables, toilets and information boards which will guide you on a 2.8 km (5.6 km return) walking track, which will take you past all three waterfalls.
Prime time for viewing these falls is during winter or spring when the water flow is more reliable.
Lal Lal Falls
Perhaps the most spectacular of Moorabool’s waterfalls, Lal Lal Falls is a 30 metre high basalt column waterfall with an impressive drop into a large rocky gorge.
The area above the falls is an open, grassy plain with Lal Lal Falls Reserve nearby, offering a playground, picnic tables, barbecues, toilets, and information boards which will guide you to all three of the area’s waterfalls.
All of which make the Reserve a great place for a picnic, with the pounding flow of the waterfall well within earshot.
Lal Lal Falls is believed by most Victorian Aboriginal tribes to be the earthly home of Bunjil, the All Father or Creator.

Granite Falls
You’ll need to deviate slightly from the walking track to reach Granite Falls, and while it’s marked on the information boards at Lal Lal Reserve, there’s no sign indicating the location while you are out on the trail.
It’s located about two thirds of the way along the trail to Moorabool Falls – look out for a park bench about 1.6 km from the car park, as the trail heads north-west, and you’re in the area – consult your phone if in doubt.
It's worth the effort. Granite Falls flows over hard granite rock, where the normally overlying basalt has been eroded away, forming rounded boulders.

Moorabool Falls
Moorabool Falls is a 27-meter waterfall, dropping into a tranquil pool surrounded by rocks, moss and ferns.
Descend down towards the creek and you’ll find a viewing platform which offers a great view of the top of the falls, but you’ll find the best view of the waterfall from a bench seat located slightly downstream.
Moorabool Falls is part of the country of the Tooloora Baluk, a clan of the Wathawurrung people.
Moorabool Falls sits on property managed by Central Highlands Water as part of the Lal Lal catchment, and direct access to the falls is prohibited. But stay inside the marked area and you’ll be fine.
