Lal Lal Bungal Historic Area, a glimpse into the past

Located within the 75 acre Lal Lal State Forest, this historical area offers an insight into the history of its region, along with walking trails, a picnic area, toilets, barbecues, fire pits and camping.

Standing centrally in the area are what remains of the Lal Lal Blast Furnace. A reminder from the mid-1870s of the only attempt to smelt iron ore in Victoria, the furnace has an 'A' classification from the National Trust.

Interpretive signage and a wooden viewing platform have been installed at the site, to give visitors the best view of the iron mine and blast furnace.

The furnace is also the kick-off point for the Lal Lal Bungal Circuit, a 23.2km, Grade 3 hike through the Lal Lal Bungal Historic Area. The hike takes in a number of the tracks originally created by the Lal Lal Iron Company.
