Wombat State Forest: hiking, camping, fishing, off-roading

Wombat State Forest has become a beloved destination for off-road driving, hiking, picnicking, horseback riding, bird watching, fishing, and earns its reputation as one of the best areas for mountain biking in Victoria.

This substantial regrowth forest is teeming with native plants and animals, including rare and threatened species, such as the Powerful Owl and Wombat Bush Pea.

It’s also a significant water catchment area, containing the headwaters of the Lerderderg, Moorabool, Coliban, Campaspe and Loddon rivers.

The forest also contains over 80% of Australia’s mineral springs, rich in calcium, silica, magnesium, iron and sulphur. Find out more about how to sample our region’s spring water at our Mineral Springs page.

Those not travelling by foot take note: by order of the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action, four-wheel driving, mountain biking, motorcycling and horse riding are only permitted in the forest on made roads.

Adjacent to Blackwood township, extending along both sides of the Dividing Range.
